WATER – Home and Travel
Saturday, October 3rd, 2009 | Our Best Advice | No Comments
According to Reuters - Canadian circus billionaire Guy Laliberte (dubbed the first clown in space) arrived in a Russian space craft at the International Space Station yesterday, for a 10-day trip on the space shuttel that cost him over $35 million.
Laliberte is a former fire-breather and founder of the Montreal based Cirque du Soleil. He donned a red clown’s nose, and brought some for the other astronauts (nice guy!) and waved to his wife and children in a video link-up from the space station to mission control. Laliberte plans to use the trip to draw attention to the importance of access to clean water on Earth. He is scheduled to hold a two-hour webcast on October 9, featuring former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, Irish rock group U2 and others– so catch that show and tell others.
The 50-year-old Laliberte is worth an estimated $2.5 billion, having turned a passion for acrobatics and circus acts into a global entertainment empire. Our TIP for today is support and demand access to clean water, free clean water, and rights for space tourism as part of our human rights. There is no basis for any country, corporation, person, or doctrine (that is sane) to deny us such rights. On the other hand, if we wish to discuss how insanely creative we truly are, go see a wonderful Cirque de Soleil show when it comes to your area until you can afford the 35Million he paid for the privilege of being the 7th Earth space tourist for an off-world experience, a truly insane amount!

Dennis Tito - first private astronaut
Wikipedia on space tourism includes one of our clients (ISA clients), Dennis Anthony Tito, (see Dennis Tito, engineer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist), more widely known as the first space tourist to pay for his own ticket. In mid-2001 he spent nearly eight days in orbit on Soyuz TM-32, the International Space Station, and Soyuz TM-31. Mr. Tito has been instrumental in prompting others to go, but now that the crew of the shuttle has been expanded the likelihood of more privately self funded astronauts will be curtailed.

Richard Branson - visionary head of Virgin Galactic
That leaves Richard Branson of Virgin spacetravel (Wiki main article: Virgin Galactic ), who we believe will go down as one of the greatest entrepreneurs in our human history, not just for privately funding space travel and jump starting it with Paul Allen’s X prize (a joint venture between Paul Allen and Scaled Composites, Burt Rutan‘s aviation company, in their Tier One program) to ensure we go off world, as a continuing adventure of our human legacy. These are visionaries who are fearless example of men without geographical limits. Branson decided to build the first space port for Virgin Galactic in New Mexico under the friendly space exploration loving Governor Paul Richardsen’s kindred passion, who loved that vision and helped make it possible. As a former resident of Santa Fe, I’m excited for space tourists to see the land of enchantment’s skies before they take off into the Big Sky. I love that Sir Richard Branson is a self-made billionaire, a high school dropout, and dyslexic (me too), who didn’t let any disadvantage stop his adventuring into new frontiers. Virgin Airline is offering suborbital spaceflights on Virgin Galactic with a new version of SpaceShipOne featured on their website. See description of flights, the vehicle, and offered bookings on a first come first go basis at www.virgingalactic.com/

APRIL – SPRING – AND GREEN

Go Easter-Friendly And Eco-Friendly For April
April is a great month! Not only is it green with spring flowers but also fun for kids who are out of school for Easter and Passover. April is also a good time for thinking about more GREEN eco-friendly changes we can make. Our TIP is combine Easter-Friendly-And-Eco-Friendly.
Gorgeously Green is a good read or gift for any occasion with many assorted topics of GREEN TIPS. Best Selling Author Sophie Uliano’s advice for women has an introduction by Julia Roberts who strongly endorses the book. Unfortunately, during the holidays promotional products involve use of plastics. Do avoid buying those and recycle whenever possible. If celebrating Easter in traditional mode, use old baskets you can freshly paint with milk paint, fill it with shredded recycled paper, fresh cooked vegetable died Easter eggs, and a good book on GREEN living.

We know that plastic is a problem for our planet and health. For years I've carried my own glass bottle I fill with water to keep in my car, avoiding plastic altogether. Invest in a home water purifier and fill your favorite glass bottles. I do six at a time, refilling when empty. You can recycle bottles and re-use the cap that came with it, or purchase new caps from a cooking supply store.

Buddies Who Play Together Stay Together
A plastic water bottle can cause great harm for so many reasons. Some people like aluminum water bottles that are currently trendy, but they’re unsafe when a car becomes overheated from sun exposure. Heated metal will leach into water. Remember that water also acts as a solvent. Many of us intuitively feel that leaving bottled water in your car can be very dangerous. Heat reacts with plastic and releases toxic chemicals such as dioxins into water. Dioxins are a class of chemicals which have increasingly been found in breast cancer.
Avoid heating or freezing in plastics. Use ceramics or tempered glass containers made for those purposes. They last longer, are better designed, and don’t emit outgassing which can also leach into your food when storing food in the refrigerator. Make absolutely sure you don’t heat frozen foods of any kind in plastic containers in the microwave. Do transfer contents to a ceramic bowl instead. I’m not a big proponent of microwave cooking (and only keep one in our garage for purposes of warming up heat packs or towels as might be required). Several Chefs we know won’t use microwaves, considering them unhealthy to cook with. Enjoy April, please pass these TIPS to others, and send us yours!
